Vikings linebacker Casey Matthews placed on injured reserve

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings have placed linebacker Casey Matthews on injured reserve, ending his first season with the team before it started.
Matthews, the younger brother of Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews, hurt his hip doing hurdles during offseason workouts and never made it on the field for practices with the team. Coach Mike Zimmer announced the news on Sunday.
Matthews was a fourth-round draft pick by Philadelphia in 2011 and played four years for the Eagles before signing a one-year contract with the Vikings. He likely would have been in the mix for the competition for time at middle linebacker.
The Vikings also placed cornerback Josh Robinson on the physically unable to perform list because of a torn pectoral muscle.
