Tough day to be a back judge in the NFL as two get run over in separate games (GIFs)

By Sam Gardner, FOXSports.com In the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin set out to keep a Donnie Jones punt from reaching the end zone, and nothing was going to stop him from getting there — not even a back judge who unexpectedly found himself in the line of fire. Unfortunately for Boykin, not only did he not get to the ball — his teammate Roc Carmichael beat him to it — but the punt ended up landing in the end zone for a touchback anyway. There’s a thought from some that Broncos cornerback Quentin Jammer may have shoved Boykin into Dale Shaw, the back judge on Pete Morelli’s crew, and others have speculated that Boykin’s contact with the official may have been less innocent than it appeared. But in any case, props to Shaw for hopping right back up to call the play. Moments after that play happened in Denver another back judge, this time Billy Smith in the Jets-Titans game, was run over by Tennessee WR Nate Washington, who then cruised into the end zone for six points.
