The trickle down effect of 'Romo Wednesday'

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:44 p.m. ET

IRVING, Texas -- Quarterback Tony Romo sat out of practice Wednesday, a continuation of the practice last year that saw the four-time Pro Bowler miss Wednesday practices. One person who directly benefits from Romo missing Wednesday practices is backup Brandon Weeden.

"I'm just getting 35 to 40 extra reps that I normally wouldn't get," said Weeden. "You know, a lot of guys across the league on a Wednesday or a Thursday, our kind of big install days, I'm able to go out there and get some live reps. I told [Wade Wilson] that I'm lucky to get those reps because it just gives you one day of preparation that a lot of backups don't get."

The extra reps produced mixed results for the former 2012 first-round pick. In his lone start filling in for an injured Romo, Weeden went completed 18 passes on 33 attempts for 183 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 28-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. However, a week prior when Weeden had to replace Romo as he was knocked out against Washington, he went 4/6 for 69 yards, including tossing a 25-yard touchdown to tight end Jason Witten to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Weeden has been battling a concussion sustained against the San Francisco 49ers in the team's second preseason game. But he insists he is ready to backup Romo as the team faces the New York Giants on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium.
