Rays embrace faux throwbacks for Turn Back the Clock Night

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It's baaaack.
The Tampa Bay Rays' fauxback uniform returned Saturday at Tropicana Field for Turn Back the Clock Night against the Houston Astros. Of course, the Rays debuted in 1998 and weren't a thought in an era of disco, afro hairstyles and Richard Nixon.
But that didn't stop them this weekend from sporting a 1970s-style look in the third game of their four-game series against Houston. The Astros played along by wearing their retro look appropriate for the time.

Call Rays manager Joe Maddon a fan of the old-school threads. He gave his take on the fauxbacks before the game.
"They're really comfortable," he said. "I was talking about that, back in the day ... we had a pullover. At that time, with the (California) Angels, I thought, 'Man, it would be so nice to have button-downs.' Now you have the button-down, everybody wears the button-down, and when you have the pullover on, it's a really, really comfortable fit. So maybe moving forward, we can come back to that just a little bit. But I think, honestly, the fauxback is really tastefully done. Of course, we did not exist at that time. The Astros are wearing their old striped things. I love those."
Groovy, indeed.
