Pettine: Browns will split QB reps in Washington

BEREA, Ohio - The Cleveland Browns went through another day of their training camp quarterback competition Tuesday. After practice, Browns coach Mike Pettine said he and his staff will decide on a starting quarterback for next Monday's preseason game at Washington on Thursday, a scheduled day off for the players.

Rookie Johnny Manziel took all the reps with the No. 1 offense Tuesday and produced little in the way of memorable or even significant gains. Brian Hoyer, who's taken the majority of the starter's reps and entered camp as the No. 1 quarterback, worked with the No. 2 offense Tuesday.

Pettine said he believes who takes the first snaps "is overrated" and said for the first time that he expects Hoyer and Manziel to get "equal reps" with the starters in that game.

In his first interview of training camp after Tuesday's practice, Browns quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains praised both but said no one is ahead.

"They're both doing well," Loggains said. "We have plenty of time. I'm excited to see where they are two or three weeks from now."

Pettine has said throughout camp he wants a decision by next week, before the Aug. 23 third preseason game vs. St. Louis. Asked Tuesday, again, if that was still the case, Pettine said he believes the team is "on schedule" for that.

The Browns added veteran quarterback Rex Grossman to the roster Tuesday. Grossman was present for practice but did not participate. Pettine said Grossman's relationship with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and knowledge of the offense "can help all the quarterbacks in the room."
