Padres trade Fernando Rodney to Marlins for Chris Paddack
The San Diego Padres traded what was one of the few bright spots for them in 2016 in closer Fernando Rodney on Thursday afternoon.
Rodney, 39, leads the MLB with a 0.31 ERA and a .137 opponent's batting average, and was a perfect 17 for 17 in save opportunities this season for the Padres, giving up his only earned run on June 21 against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Padres acquired right-handed pitcher Chris Paddack from the Miami Marlins in the trade, a high-valued prospect with some very impressive stats of his own. At Class A Greensboro for the Marlins this season, Paddack has allowed just 3 earned runs in 28.1 innings pitched, good for a 0.95 ERA.
Despite his short stint in San Diego, Rodney tweeted out the following after the trade was made public:
I want to thank the @padres my teammates & fans for supporting me in SanDiego. I felt at home & had a lot of fun. #LaFlechaOut ? @MvvmWear
