Oklahoma QB Mayfield could win walk-on award
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has an outside chance to make the Heisman Trophy ceremony. He also has been named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, which goes to college football's best player.
But Mayfield certainly has to be the front-runner for the Brandon Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the best player in college football who started his career as a walk-on.
Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech and then again at Oklahoma. He has started games at quarterback for both schools.
The award has been presented each year since 2010.
Mayfield started seven games for the Red Raiders in 2013. After transferring to OU, he won the starting job heading into the 2015 season and has led the Sooners to a 7-1 mark. Mayfield has thrown for 2,470 yards and 25 touchdowns so far this season.
Bulsworth was a walk-on at Arkansas in 1994 and became the team's starting right guard as a junior and then finished his career as a Sporting News All-American in 1998. He was killed in a car crash 11 days after being drafted by the Indianapokis Colts in 1999.
