NFL Quick Hits: Rams' Gurley misses another practice

Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:33 p.m. ET

Rams RB Todd Gurley missed practice Wednesday due to a thigh injury, and most observers thought his absence was precautionary. Gurley missed practice again on Thursday, making his situation a bit murkier. None of the team’s beat writers have written or tweeted alarming news - or much of anything at all - about Gurley’s status, but if he doesn’t practice Friday, he’ll be in danger of missing Sunday’s game against the Jets. Don’t panic if you own Gurley, but have a backup plan ready. Benny Cunningham would be the next man up in the Rams’ backfield.

In other news ...

Bucs RB Doug Martin (hamstring) has been practicing this week, but still isn’t certain that he’ll be on the field Sunday. Don’t sell your Peyton Barber stock just yet.

The Boston Herald reports that Patriots RB Dion Lewis “is on track to make his season debut Sunday.” However, remember that earlier this week, one of the beat writers speculated that Lewis might be eased back into action with the plan of having him at full speed for the playoffs. I’m skeptical about Lewis’ fantasy prospects for Week 10.

Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry (shoulder) didn’t practice Thursday, and is day to day.

Did you watch Browns-Ravens? No? Good for you! Streaming Joe Flacco worked out, as he threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Also, Terrance West was on the field for 34 snaps to Kenneth Dixon’s 26, meaning that the gap is closing. Dixon (six carries, 38 yards; five receptions, 42 yards) looked pretty good, too.

Both RB James Starks (knee) and TE Jared Cook (ankle) appear ready to return to action for the Packers. I suspect that the Pack have had enough success with Ty Montgomery in the backfield that they’d be stupid to change much, but Starks could get 6-8 carries.

TB Tevin Coleman (hamstring) still isn’t practicing for the Falcons.

Redskins WR DeSean Jackson hasn’t practiced this week due to a shoulder injury, and his status for Sunday is TBD. In other Redskins’ news, RB Matt Jones could be a healthy scratch while Rob Kelley starts.

Remember your byes: The Bills, Lions, Colts and Raiders are off, meaning that some good quarterbacks will be missing. If you need to stream a replacement and missed out on Flacco, Jay Cutler (owned in 12.8 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) isn’t a bad option against the Bucs.

Jaguars WR Allen Hurns returned to practice on Thursday, but is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Maybe we’ll know more today, but don’t count on Hurns being active.

Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (groin) missed practice again on Thursday, and looks like a longshot to play at Carolina. Tyreek Hill is fun and explosive and all, but I’d target Chris Conley if I was looking for a sleeper KC wideout.

49ers RB Carlos Hyde (shoulder), believes he’s on track to play in Sunday’s game, according to CSN Bay Area. Unfortunately, Hyde has a matchup with the Cardinals. I’d pass on this one if I could.

Steelers TE Ladarius Green has a chance to make his 2016 debut against the Cowboys on Sunday. I’d lean against using Green in fantasy football, but the Cowboys have allowed 5.9 receptions and 58 yards per game to opposing tight ends.

In other Steelers’ news, RB DeAngelo Williams had knee surgery and will miss at least few weeks. Fitzgerald Toussaint appears to be the next man up behind Le’Veon Bell, but a couple of Steeler sites are wondering if Karlos Williams will be on the active roster soon.

It’s Veterans Day, and I’d like to thank all U.S. military veterans for their service. If you’d like to spread some goodwill near the end of this very interesting week, buy a vet lunch or a cup of coffee today, or maybe consider a donation to a military charity.

Good luck in Week 10. Reach out on Twitter (@jhalpin37) if you have any questions.
