NFL adds another owners meeting to discuss L.A. topic

Meetings, meetings and more meetings. The NFL has added an additional owners meeting to the docket for August 11 in Chicago to discuss the Los Angeles topic, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Owners last met to discuss the topic in May, during the owners meetings in San Francisco. No major news came of the meeting, and no major news is expected to come from the August meeting, either. It's more so for the purpose of gathering for a progress update from each of the teams that could move -- the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers.

This likely is the closest the NFL has been to moving a team back to Los Angeles. While there still are many hurdles to jump, the stadium projects in Carson, led by the Raiders and Chargers, and Inglewood, led by the Rams, are moving forward.

The Carson project, according to a report from U-T San Diego, appears to be further along in the process than its rival. Carson Holdings LLC, operated by the Raiders and Chargers, finalized the $21.97 million purchase of 11 acres in Carson on May 20. The purchased land is across the street from the 157-acre site where the Carson stadium is proposed to be built.

The Inglewood project received unanimous approval from the City Council in February. Demolition begun last week on the grandstands at Hollywood Park race track, the proposed site of the Inglewood stadium.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, the Rams have been altering contracts with advertisers and contractors to end in February, shortly after the league's deadline for relocation.

What will be interesting to watch is what happens if both projects are viable and all three teams want to relocate. What happens then? How does the league determine who stays and who goes?

One thing we know for sure is the NFL is more serious about the topic than its ever been before.
