FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Ako Kaluna of West Ranch High School in California has signed a national letter of intent to attend Northern Arizona University and play basketball next fall, head coach Jack Murphy announced on Wednesday.

Kaluna, 6-feet-7 and 260 pounds, averaged 16.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game last season for West Ranch, earning All-Santa Clarita Valley and All-Foothill League honors. He is the sixth member of Murphy's recruiting class for 2013.

“Ako brings toughness, athleticism and size to the post and fills a need in this class that was missing up to this point,” Murphy said. “He is a strong kid that is very skilled. He looks like the prototypical left tackle, but he really loves the game of basketball.

“He wanted to be a Lumberjack and is sold on our vision.”

Kaluna joins a 2012-13 class that includes guards Travis Meeker, Christopher Miller and Kris Yanku and forwards Zachary Reynolds and Terry Winn.

Kaluna has drawn interest from USC and UCLA for football and had an offer to play basketball at Hawaii.
