MLB Quick Hits: Injuries mount for Giants

Published Apr. 8, 2015 6:27 a.m. ET

The defending champs are having a rough week. The Giants have placed SP Matt Cain on the DL with a flexor tendon strain in his elbow. Jake Peavy might join Cain on the shelf, as his back didn't feel right during a Tuesday throwing session. Finally, 1B Brandon Belt left Tuesday's game with a strained groin and his status is TBD. Belt doesn't seem to think the issue is too serious, but as backup Travis Ishikawa is already on the DL, the Giants might not have the luxury of letting Belt wait more than a day or two to heal. October seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?

In other news ...

Did anyone start Mat Latos on Tuesday? Yeah, that wasn't fun. He got negative-17.30 points on DraftKings. Latos' ADP (46th among SPs, per NFBC) suggests that most fantasy players didn't invest much in him, and we obviously shouldn't panic after one bad start. Chill out, Latos owners.

The Brewers seem to think that Ryan Braun's side injury will only keep him out for a day or two. The Brew Crew plays tonight and is off Thursday.

Dodgers RP Chris Hatcher had a second outing that wasn't as good as his first, as all four batters he faced reached base (one was on an error). It's worth noting that the game was tied when Hatcher entered; now we can't expect him to appear exclusively in save situations.

In related news, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen (foot) is targeting a mid-May return, while SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) appears to be on a similar timetable.

Brewers SS Jean Segura got hit in the face by a pitch on Tuesday, but stayed in the game. He must have rubbed some dirt on it.

Here's an update on the NYC/Masahiro Tanaka freakout, which includes the Yankees thinking that something got lost in translation when their ace said over the weekend that he might not throw as hard this season. Part of me wants Tanaka to get Tommy John surgery now just so I don't have to read any more sportswriter orthopedists saying he should get it even if the injury doesn't get worse. "Tanaka opened last night's game with an 88-mph fastball ... his elbow ligament is clearly fraying."

Mets closer Jenrry Mejia has been placed on the DL due to elbow inflammation, and that's probably a best-case scenario for Mejia. Jeurys Familia is your man for Mets saves right now.

D-backs 3B Jake Lamb has a homer and seven RBI in his first two games. Lamb isn't THIS good, but he might be OK enough to own in deep mixed leagues. Lamb is owned in 2.9 percent of FOXSports.com leagues.

Rays 1B James Loney might miss a few days after injuring his right side, while C/DH John Jaso (wrist) could be headed for the DL. On the bright side, Alex Cobb's recovery seems to be progressing well. We'll know more on Thursday about Drew Smyly's progress.

The A's are reportedly ready to sign OF Cody Ross, and plan to send speedy Billy Burns to the minors. In other A's news, SP Jarrod Parker is doing well in TJ rehab, and aiming for a June return.

Nationals OF Jayson Werth (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, so he's probably just days away from returning to the Nats' lineup.

Tuesday's Cardinals-Cubs game was postponed, so the Lance Lynn-Jake Arrieta matchup will take place today.

Tuesday's streaming starter pick, Oakland's Jesse Hahn, was just OK. Today's selection is Tampa Bay's Jake Odorizzi, who is owned in 30.9 percent of FOXSports.com leagues and carries a DraftKings salary of $7,400 (15th among SPs). The matchup isn't necessarily advantageous - I just like Odorizzi more than most people. If I'm right, his ownership percentage will increase soon. If I'm not, some of my fantasy teams might die quick deaths.

I'll be off Thursday and Friday - it's been a long season so far - but check back here for more FOX Fantasy Buzz from a mystery guest.
