Jerry Jones: 'We will make a roster spot' for Josh Brent
OXNARD, Calif. - Josh Brent is scheduled to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday, according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who said his team will create a roster spot for Brent when he is cleared to return to football.
"We will," Jones said. "We will make a roster spot."
Brent, a defensive tackle who had been on the verge of developing into a starter, served a 180-day prison sentence after being convicted of intoxication manslaughter in a December 2012 car accident that took the life of teammate Jerry Brown.
He was released from jail June 15 and finished the remainder of his sentence in a substance-abuse center. Upon completion of that process, he filed papers to come out of retirement. Brent could face additional punishment from the commissioner.
Said team leader Jason Witten: "He was a good teammate. You don't give up on your teammates. ... The players will welcome him back."
