It's official: Dan Marino returning to Dolphins as special adviser

The Miami Dolphins announced Sunday the hiring of Dan Marino as a special adviser.

"Dan is and will always be an important part of the Miami Dolphins, and we are excited to get him involved in a more formal way," Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said. "Dan is unquestionably one of the greatest players in NFL history and his enthusiasm and passion for the Dolphins is inspiring to everyone here."

The news of Marino's impending hire was first reported by NBC 6 following the Dolphins' 25-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday night. Marino had earlier in the week visited the team's practice facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie and was spotted speaking with several members of the organization, including head coach Joe Philbin.

Marino "will work with the organization in a variety of different capacities," the press release stated.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve in this role. I have always considered myself a Dolphin for life and I look forward to supporting the organization anyway I can," Marino said. "Stephen Ross is a passionate guy who is committed to building a first-class, winning organization. I'm excited about the future of the team and where the organization is headed."

The Hall of Fame quarterback played 242 games for the Dolphins in 17 years, setting 31 regular-season team records and 12 playoff records. The Dolphins retired his No. 13 jersey on Sept. 17, 2000, when he was also inducted into the Dolphins Honor Roll. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
