Dolphins' Jordan suspended by NFL for 2015 season

Miami Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan has been suspended for the entire 2015 season for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy, the team announced Tuesday.

"We were disappointed to learn about Dion Jordan’s most recent suspension for violating the NFL's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse," a team statement read. "A player's health and well-being are of the utmost importance to us. We have made every effort to support Dion, both on and off the field and we will continue to do so to the extent allowable under NFL guidelines."

Jordan, who had been noticeably absent from voluntary team workout sessions that began last week at the Dolphins training facility, was suspended twice last season for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance abuse policy and missed six games. According to multiple reports, Jordan's latest violation came for submitting a diluted sample.

During the Dolphins pre-draft press conference held last Friday, team executives refused to comment on Jordan's absence but did not publicly back him either.

"Right now we're in the voluntary part of the offseason program and we're really happy with the attendance," said executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum. "If somebody chooses not to be here that's obviously their decision. We can certainly talk about the guys that are here. That's the part of the offseason program where we're at."

The 2013 third overall draft pick has been a major bust for the Dolphins after they traded up in the draft with the No. 12 selection and a second-round pick (No. 42) to draft Jordan. He has record just three sacks and 46 tackles in two seasons, with his latest suspension likely spelling the end of his time with the Dolphins.

At the time of his second suspension last September, an apologetic Jordan said in a team statement that he was seeking treatment to address his situation and that he was "working hard to become a better man and to make better choices in the future".

By being suspended for the entire season, a portion of Jordan's $5.3 million salary will not count against the team's cap. The Dolphins are still on the hook for his $3 million signing bonus.
