Dolphins exercise fifth-year option on center Mike Pouncey

The Miami Dolphins exercised their fifth-year option on Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey, the team announced Tuesday.

Pouncey, who'll turn 25 in July, is the lone returning starter to an offensive line that faced much adversity last season. The 15th overall selection in the 2011 NFL draft, the former Florida Gators star now is under contract through 2015.

Pouncey last season became the first Dolphins center selected to the Pro Bowl since Tim Ruddy in 2000. Hall of Famers Jim Langer (1973-78) and Dwight Stephenson (1983-87) are the only other Miami Pro Bowl centers.

The Dolphins surrendered the most sacks (58) in the league finished 27th ranked in rushing offense with 90 yards per game. There also was the infamous bullying scandal involving Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito.

Although the controversy focused mainly on Martin and Incognito, Pouncey was implicated in a report following an independent investigation authorized by the NFL. Lead investigator Ted Wells said he did not believe Pouncey was truthful in some of his conversations with investigators.

It remained unclear if Pouncey will be suspended for the start of next season, and if so, for how long.

Former Dolphins guard John Jerry, who signed as a free agent with the New York Giants, also was implicated in Wells' report.
