Deadline deals: Bucs send Mark Barron to Rams, Jonathan Casillas to Patriots

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have parted ways with safety Mark Barron and linebacker Jonathan Casillas.

Prior to the NFL trade deadline Tuesday afternoon, Barron was dealt to the St. Louis Rams for a fourth and sixth-round pick. In addition, Casillas and a sixth-round pick in 2015 were sent to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round selection in 2015.

Barron, 25, was viewed as a disappointment in his two-plus seasons with the Bucs. The seventh overall pick from Alabama in 2012, he had 225 tackles with three interceptions in 37 games. At 6-foot-2, 213 pounds, he was thought to be a sizable presence in the secondary to counteract offensive weapons in the NFC South like New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, but Barron never lived his potential with Tampa Bay and was largely ineffective in coach Lovie Smith's Tampa-2 scheme.

Meanwhile, Casillas joined the Bucs before the 2013 season as a free agent and had 44 tackles in 17 games with Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old played in 12 games last year but in just five this campaign with Danny Lansanah's emergence.

With the trades, the Bucs have eight draft picks next year.
