Darrelle Revis cleared for start of Bucs training camp

TAMPA, Fla. -- Cornerback Darrelle Revis will be on the field when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers open training camp Thursday, but it is uncertain if he will play in preseason games.
On Wednesday, Bucs coach Greg Schiano said Revis, a four-time Pro Bowl player, is "in good shape" and will begin to play back into football condition. Revis, who was traded from the New York Jets in April, has rehabbed a left knee that sustained a season-ending torn ACL last September. He worked to the side in Tampa Bay's offseason workouts this spring but did not participate in drills.
"He'll be out there tomorrow," Schiano said Wednesday.
"Darrelle is going to go through things. He'll do some stuff, but we're not going to have him do everything. ... With a guy like Darrelle, he's a professional. He knows what he has to do to get ready. We're going to help him and make sure he's ready to go when we start."
Schiano added that it is unknown whether Revis will participate in preseason games. He said much of the Bucs' future course of action with Revis will depend on how the three-time All-Pro looks in training camp.
The Bucs have been optimistic about Revis' progress for some time. During offseason workouts, Schiano said that they were working toward the player starting a Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
In June, Revis said he was "confident" in his rehab and that he had cut with comfort on the affected knee. He said he wanted to recover in such a way that health would not be a future issue.
"I'm going full-tilt, and I'm cutting, because I feel good," Revis said of his rehab then. "I'm cutting and running and doing what I have to do, but I still have to listen to (trainer) Todd (Toriscelli) and go through the process for them to clear me to get back on the field.
"I'm a veteran. Some of the things we did in New York, Coach Schiano does down here too. I'm fine with that. I think the biggest thing is making sure I'm 100 percent when I step out there with the guys, with my teammates, and we can go out there and play some great football."
Tampa Bay opens the preseason schedule Aug. 8 against the Baltimore Ravens at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs have games at the New England Patriots (Aug. 16) and Miami Dolphins (Aug. 24) before closing the exhibition season at home against the Washington Redskins (Aug. 29).
"I think a lot of it depends on how he looks out there," Schiano said of Revis playing in the preseason. "That's when Revis, (general manager Mark) Dominik, Schiano, we all get together with Toriscelli and the doctors and say, ‘Okay, how are you feeling?' What's the response?'
"He's played in a lot of football games. But I think he probably wants to play, wants to be with his new teammates, play in this new scheme. We're going to balance it all out."
