Cardinals recall Gant from Triple-A, DFA Siegrist
ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals adjusted their pitching staff Thursday, recalling right-hander John Gant from Triple-A Memphis and designating lefty Kevin Siegrist, who was just activated from the 10-day disabled list, for assignment.
The news of Siegrist's DFA comes as somewhat of a surprise as the 28-year-old was rehabbing from forearm tendinitis and had been used as an important setup man in the Cardinals' bullpen before the injury. Siegrist went 1-1 with a 4.98 ERA and one save in 39 relief appearances this season.
Gant was acquired by the Cardinals last December in a trade that sent Jaime Garcia to the Atlanta Braves. Gant, used exclusively as a starter with the Memphis Redbirds this season, is 6-5 with a 3.83 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 103 1/3 innings.
The 25-year-old should slide into an important long-relief role with the Cardinals for the time being. With usual long-relief pitcher Tyler Lyons expected to get more save opportunities and recently recalled pitcher Jack Flaherty making his major league debut when he starts Friday against the Giants, Gant should provide some flexibility in the bullpen.
Gant was also recalled to St. Louis on May 31 and made one relief appearance, throwing 3 1/3 innings at Cincinnati on June 6, which is tied for the longest relief outing by a Cardinals pitcher this season.
