IRVING, Texas -- If the Dallas Cowboys keep their word and run the ball more often in 2014, second-year running back Joseph Randle could benefit greatly.

DeMarco Murray is undoubtedly the team's lead back. But Murray has yet to play a full 16-game season during his three years in the league.

Yes, Lance Dunbar should see an increase in carries this season, however, he isn't considered to be as much of an every down back as Randle. When Murray missed two games because of injury last year, Randle started in his place.

Through two preseason games, Randle has carried 20 times for 91 yards. That's seven more carries than any other back on the Cowboys roster.

"I feel like I'm bigger, I'm stronger, I'm smarter," Randle said Tuesday. "I'm a year smarter in the playbook. I think that's all things that help me play fast. Now, I'm just working on playing fast every play I'm out there. That comes with practice."

The Cowboys will carry at least three running backs when they trim their roster down to 53 in the upcoming weeks. Randle, a fifth-round pick, is the favorite to beat out Ryan Williams for that third spot. Randle's experience playing special teams certainly helps his case.

But what must Randle do to guarantee he's on the roster in Week 1?

"Just keep being the best Joseph Randle I can be," he said. "That's all I can do. I feel like I'm representing myself the right way, showing who I am each day, and that's what my goal is."

Sounds like the young back has been listening to Jason Garrett. The Cowboys coach often preaches to his players about being the best version of themselves.
