Abreu heads list of weekend injuries

In a big weekend for big-name injuries, the biggest was MLB home run leader Jose Abreu, who is on the DL with an injured left ankle. Abreu apparently sprained the ankle during spring training, and has "battled inflammation and soreness off and on," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The Sox - who activated Adam Eaton to replace Abreu on the roster - are hopeful that Abreu will need only the 15-day minimum before returning.
On to the rest of the news:
Reds 1B Joey Votto hasn't played since Thursday due to a quad injury, and while he hasn't yet been placed on the DL, it doesn't sound like he'll play until at least this weekend. If you own Votto in a weekly league, bench him.
Nationals SP Gio Gonzalez is on the DL with shoulder inflammation, but for now the team doesn't think he'll miss an extended period of time. Either Blake Treinen or Taylor Jordan is expected take Gonzalez's rotation slot.
Streaming starters: The steady Jose Quintana gave us a solid outing on Friday, Samuel Deduno was pretty good on Saturday, and Brad Peacock was good enough on Sunday. All three of our starters earned wins, and we're up to 31-17 for the season.
Today's pick is Jason Vargas (owned in 37.6 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) against the undermanned White Sox, while Tuesday's selection is Colby Lewis (1.6 percent owned) at home versus the Mariners.
The Indians sent Danny Salazar to the minors, and Trevor Bauer will take his rotation slot on Tuesday against the Tigers. Am I way too excited that Bauer will be my AL keeper team's savior, and become a top-60 starter for the remainder of the season? Very possibly.
Padres SP Andrew Cashner is on the DL with elbow soreness, but the team doesn't seem to think he'll need anything more than a few weeks of rest. Apparently, Tommy John surgery isn't a mandatory procedure this season. Who knew?
The Pirates think they might get both C Russell Martin and RP Jason Grilli back from the DL this week.
Brewers OF Carlos Gomez - who has missed five straight games due to a suspension, and a bad back, and an illness - should be ready to go tonight.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) is listed as the Dodgers' probable starter for Wednesday. Ryu will face the Mets at CitiField, so start him if you own him.
Could new Astro Kyle Farnsworth get some save opportunities? Stranger things have happened, but I wouldn't invest FAAB money in him or anything. In other Astros' news, SS Jonathan Villar left Sunday's game with a bruised hand, but he thinks he'll play tonight.
The lost season continues for Red Sox 3B Will Middlebrooks, who's on the DL with a broken right index finger. In other Sox news that you can file away for later, SS prospect Mookie Betts - who's batting .383 with six home runs, 44 runs scored and 18 stolen bases at Double A - started in center field on both Saturday and Sunday. Jackie Bradley Jr. might want to start hitting soon.
With Corey Hart (hamstring) probably headed for the DL, the Mariners aree expected to recall 2B/SS Nick Franklin. If Brad Miller continues to struggle, Franklin could get a decent number of at bats.
A's SS Jed Lowrie left Sunday's game with a strained neck; his status is TBD.
Jenrry Mejia got the Mets' save on Saturday. He's owned in 10.6 percent of FOXSports.com leagues - get him while you still can, folks.
The Blue Jays have sent struggling rookie SP/RP Marcus Stroman back to the minors.
Stop me if you've heard this before: Padres OF Carlos Quentin (groin) is day to day.
The Giants hope that OF Angel Pagan (shoulder) will be ready to play on Tuesday.
See you back here tomorrow morning.
