Shore's late goal helps Kings beat Oilers 4-3

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Kings realized how lucky they were to get out of Staples Center with two points against a stubborn Edmonton Oilers squad that hadn't won a game in Los Angeles in more than four years.

Nick Shore scored the go-ahead goal with 1:39 left in the third period, and the Pacific Division leaders also got goals from Marian Gaborik, Tanner Pearson and Milan Lucic in a 4-3 victory over the Oilers on Saturday night.

''We didn't play the kind of north-south game we usually play, and we made a lot of turnovers in the neutral zone and our zone,'' Gaborik said. ''This team has fast forwards and they can make us pay. So we've got to clean it up and go from there. But this was a huge win for us, finishing this homestand with two points before going on the road.''

Jonathan Quick made 22 saves, improving his career record against the Oilers to 16-1-5 in a matchup of teams with the best and worst records in the Division. The Kings have beaten the Oilers seven straight times at Staples Center.

''It's tough on everybody,'' Edmonton coach Todd McLellan said. ''Guys laid everything they had on the line to fight back, and we made some mistakes on situations that we worked on and practiced and should be able to take care of. Two offensive penalties in the last six or seven minutes of the game (both against center Anton Lander) are unacceptable. Four out of our last seven penalties are in the offensive zone for tripping, hooking and holding, and you aren't going to win like that - not with our team.''

Teddy Purcell, Taylor Hall and rookie Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers, who ended a four-game road trip that included an overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks in which they rallied three times from one-goal deficits. Draisaitl has five goals and eight assists since his promotion from the minors.

Hall, the first overall pick in the 2010 draft, tied it on a short wrist shot in the slot with 4:50 remaining after Oscar Klefborn backhanded him the puck from the left circle for his second assists of the night.

But Shore beat Cam Talbot low to the stick side with a 25-foot wrist shot after Pearson intercepted the goalie's attempted clearing pass around the boards and fed Shore in the slot.

''I tried to knock the puck down and throw it at the net. Sometimes they go in,'' Shore said.

Talbot, who surrendered nine goals in his previous two starts, gave up Gaborik's goal at 1:17 of the first period on the game's first shot on net.

Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera lost the puck to the forechecking Pearson behind the net, and Gaborik eluded rookie Darnell Nurse at the right of the crease before ending an 11-game goal drought.

''We actually worked on our forecheck in practice the other day. So we were able to clean it up, and obviously it helped us out tonight,'' Pearson said. ''We were able to generate pucks to the net and it worked out for us.''

Pearson made it 2-0 at 18:56 of the first. Gaborik won a race with rookie defenseman Griffin Reinhart for a loose puck in the neutral zone after a turnover by Reinhart inside the Edmonton blueline, then took a 20-foot wrist shot that bounced off Talbot's chest. But Pearson got the rebound and shook off a check by Eric Gyrba before beating Talbot to the glove side from 25 feet out.

''In the first five minutes they took it to us, like they do to a lot of teams in their own building'' Hall said. ''But as the game went on, we had control of the play. We definitely played well enough to win.''

Edmonton got on the board at 5:17 of the second, when Draisaitl beat Quick to the glove side with a one-timer from the right circle. An injury to Connor McDavid, the first overall pick in the June draft, opened up a roster spot for Draisaitl - the 3rd overall pick in 2014.

''Against a division opponent, we need to get points in these type of games. That's the bottom line,'' Gaborik said. ''They're a young, fast team and we let them back in the game.''

Lucic gave the Kings a 3-1 lead at 8:35 of the second before Purcell made it a one-goal game again at 13:53, on an assist from Draisaitl.

NOTES: A moment of silence was observed for the victims of Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris. ... Quick's only regulation loss to the Oilers came on Nov. 3, 2011, when Ryan Smyth, Lennart Petrell and Corey Potter scored against him in Nikolai Khabibulin's 3-0 victory at Los Angeles. ... Neither the Kings nor the Oilers have gone to a shootout this season. Last season, Edmonton was 5-7 in shotouts and Los Angeles was 2-8. ... Kings C Anze Kopitar played in his 700th regular-season game.
