Rams' Gurley scoffs at idea of hitting rookie wall: 'I'm good'

St. Louis Rams running back Todd Gurley dismissed the notion that he has hit the "rookie wall" known to affect many first-year players.

“What wall?” Gurley responded while meeting with reporters Thursday. “I’m good.”

Given Gurley's dwindling production since his meteoric start to his NFL career, it was a fair question. He was limited to 19 yards on nine carries in last week's 31-7 loss at Cincinnati and has rushed for a combined 130 yards in his last three starts.

That's a far cry from the player who took the league by storm, becoming the first rookie in league history to rush for at least 128 yards in each of his first four career starts.

“He’s in great shape right now,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "He knows he’s a big part of this team. His production on the field not only helps offense, it helps defense, it helps everything. He’s in good shape.”

Gurley broke off four runs of at least 20 yards in his first career start at Arizona in Week 4. With Sunday's rematch against the Cardinals looming, Gurley does not have a run longer than nine yards in the last three games.

“You don’t point your finger at one thing,” offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti said. “First off, you give defenses credit. Defenses have done a very nice job. We’re going to continue to give him at bats. The big ones will come.”
