Mara Tells Tale Of Giving The Lombardi Trophy The Boot

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Clearly, actress Kate Mara understands the NFL. As the great-granddaughter of both New York Giants founder Tim Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Sr.,  the famous actress  has seen a Lombardi Trophy or two. But that fact did not keep her from fumbling away one of sports most famous awards.

Well, not quite.

Many fans have not seen the Lombardi Trophy in person. So to handle it, might be unthinkable in for some. But Kate Mara is the product of a Steelers – Giants marriage. These two teams have combined to win 20 percent of the Lombardi Trophies handed out by the NFL since 1967.

According to the New York Post on Nov. 28, 2016, it was a former boyfriend of Mara’s who disrespected the iconic trophy at her parents house several years ago. Kate Mara told the anecdote of Monday night’s version of “Conan” on TBS.

Mara’s Date Boots The Lombardi Trophy, Kate Kicks Him To Curb

To hear Kate Mara tell the story, her parents, Tim and Kathleen, encouraged Kate and her boyfriend to handle the trophy. After all, it comes complete with a set of fancy white gloves, so as to not leave finger prints.

What came next was totally unexpected.

“[My then boyfriend] was a very enthusiastic man and he put on the gloves and then he went to lift up the trophy, but he lifted it up from the base, which we didn’t know wasn’t connected to the trophy, and it fell. … He was wearing these steel-toed boots, he was a pretty good soccer player and he kicked his foot up and caught the trophy with his boot and then caught it in his hands,” Mara explained.

“And he dented, just a tiny part.”

Oops.

Mara did not name the antagonist by name, but the New York Post narrowed down the potentials to “Daredevil” star Charlie Cox in 2008, or actor Max Minghella, who was reported to be dating Mara in 2011.

Mara did not seem too concerned. “The good news is we always win,” Mara said. “Someone’s always happy.”

If the whole Robbie Gould thing continues to go south, the G-Men might want to get on the horn with whoever was responsible for the dent.
