Dolphins reinstate safety Don Jones after suspension for homophobic tweets
The Miami Dolphins have reinstated safety Don Jones after he was suspended following a homophobic tweet about St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam during draft weekend, FOX Sports has learned.
The Dolphins announced May 11 that Jones was fined and indefinitely excused from their offseason workout program. Jones posted the phrases “OMG” (Oh My God) and “horrible” when televised draft coverage showed Sam kissing his boyfriend after his seventh-round selection.
The Dolphins required that Jones undergo “educational training” for his comments before allowing him to rejoin the squad.
Jones, a 2013 seventh-round pick from Arkansas State, finished his rookie season with 10 tackles and a forced fumble while appearing as a backup in all 16 games. Jones issued an apology through Miami’s media relations department, stating that his comments were “inappropriate.”
Sam is the first openly gay player drafted in NFL history.
