Warriors' Steve Kerr could resume coaching duties this weekend

Published Dec. 31, 2015 5:57 p.m. ET

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr could make his season debut as soon as this weekend, according to ESPN.com.

There is no official timetable for his return yet, but Kerr joined the team on its two-game road trip in Texas, which marks the first multi-game trip he has traveled on this season. He also traveled with the team to Los Angeles when they faced the Clippers in November.

Interim head coach Luke Walton said Kerr is using the road trip as a test run to see how his body handles the grueling nature of the coaching grind:

Kerr has been all 31 games this season following a spinal leak after several offseason back surgeries.

The Warriors looked lost without Stephen Curry in their 114-91 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, but help could be on the way sooner than expected.

Golden State hosts the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, Jan. 2.

"It's obviously a possibility," interim coach Luke Walton said of Kerr's potential return to the bench this weekend. "He hasn't said he's going to. To be honest, I don't think he knows yet. I think that's part of why he's on this road trip, to see how his body handles the travel and getting into Houston at 1 a.m. tonight to turn around and play again then get on another plane and fly home and get in late again. So that's part of why he's here on this trip, whether or not this weekend is a realistic return or not."
