Timberwolves extend qualifying offer to Robbie Hummel

Robbie Hummel hasn't had the greatest career so far. In two season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the 26-year-old (!) has averaged just 3.9 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting.

But according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Minnesota won't give up on him just yet. Here's more:

"The Timberwolves have extended a qualifying offer to Robbie Hummel, a source told the Pioneer Press on Sunday. The offer makes him a restricted free agent, and the Wolves can match offers from other in July. Coach Flip Saunders relied on Hummel's versatility and smart play when injuries decimated the team last season. Hummel, a 6-foot-8 forward, played point guard in emergency situations."

This doesn't guarantee Hummel will play for the Timberwolves next season, only that he's officially a restricted free agent. If any other team in the league makes an offer that's seemingly unreasonable, president Flip Saunders will likely let him walk instead of matching it.

But if the Timberwolves are down to giving one of their roster spots to Hummel or Anthony Bennett, Hummel's lower price tag makes him the more desirable option. Of course, they still need to find a trade partner to unload the former first overall pick and his $5.8 million salary.
