San Francisco approves new Mission Bay arena for Warriors

On Tuesday night, the Warriors improved to 23-0. But a win over the Pacers wasn't the team's only victory. The team also received approval from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for a new arena in Mission Bay.

According to a news release, the three-year campaign for the new arena reached a breakthrough Tuesday night after the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted in favor of a 18,500-seat, $1 billion arena. The only sticking points covered traffic that the arena would cause, but a proposal that would strengthen public transportation convinced the committee. 

The Mission Bay Alliance (UCSF donors and board members) has publicized plans to file a lawsuit that would block the arena. Now, it seems, the conversation will move to the courts. 

San Francisco mayor Ed Lee, however, called the move a "huge win for San Francisco" in the statement. The Warriors played in San Francisco from 1962-1971.

“This new, privately financed, state-of-the-art Golden State Warriors event center rounds out Mission Bay as an incredible and diverse ecosystem of technology, health care, science and, now, entertainment,” Lee said. “The Warriors are inspiring a new generation of fans throughout the Bay Area. I can’t wait to welcome them home to San Francisco.”
