Report: Suns coach Hornacek entering final year of contract
For a team that seemed to have such a bright future not so long ago, there's a lot that's up in the air for the Phoenix Suns moving forward. And the status of coach Jeff Hornacek isn't helping to solidify the situation.
Dave King of Bright Side of the Sun has spoken extensively with Hornacek this offseason, and the latest tidbit revealed by King is Phoenix has yet to offer the coach an extension. Furthermore, the team has not exercised its option on Hornacek for the 2016-17 season, King reports.
Hornacek seems to be stoic about the situation: "Just like any other player getting towards the end of their contract," Hornacek said to Bright Side. "You go out there and do your best and these things tend to take care of themselves with time. So that's the way we approach it."
King also notes that Hornacek is among the lowest-paid coaches in the league, although he goes on to explain owner Robert Sarver's logic for that distinction -- Hornacek simply doesn't have the experience (and didn't when he was hired) of his contemporaries.
The Suns were stupendous a couple of seasons ago, when they surprised the NBA and were far more successful than most expected. But for all the good that Hornacek has done in Phoenix in keeping this team together, the negative has happened on his watch, too.
