Report: Knicks will be 'all over' free-agent-to-be Mike Conley
Mike Conley is currently dealing with an Achilles injury that's kept him out for almost two weeks, but that and a slow start of the season haven't prevented him from remaining the top free agent point guard for the upcoming summer.
Conley has never made an All-Star Game in the stacked Western Conference, but he's still one of the games elite 1s, whether because of his defense or ability to run an offense. So, it's no surprise the Knicks, who will have cap space and a probable hole at point guard, would have interest in the Grizzlies floor general.
From Marc Berman of the New York Post:
Sources have indicated the Knicks and Nets will be all over Conley, as the New York squads are two of the few NBA teams in the market for a top-notch starting point guard.
The Knicks could have anywhere between $10 million and $30 million in room this offseason depending on what happens with player options and the cap, which is expected to rise almost $20 million next season to around $90 million. It could reach as high as $108 million for 2017-18, though collective bargaining after next season could change that figure.
New York currently has Jose Calderon starting at point guard, and though Calderon does have one more year left on his deal, you have to imagine that the team's preference isn't to go into next season with him as the starter once again. Jerian Grant is on the roster, too, but he's been inconsistent in his play. Langston Galloway, meanwhile, will be a restricted free agent.
