Raptors select Utah guard Delon Wright with 20th pick
TORONTO (AP) The Toronto Raptors selected Utah guard Delon Wright with the 20th pick in the NBA draft Thursday night.
The Raptors traded backup guard Greivis Vasquez to Milwaukee for UCLA shooting guard Norman Powell - selected 46th overall by the Bucks - and a first-round pick in 2017.
The 6-foot-5 Wright averaged 14.5 points as a senior to lead the Utes in scoring. He also averaged 5.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds.
''He's one of the top defensive point guards in the draft,'' Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. ''He defends, he can run the pick and roll very well. Great kid, good character, good team guy, and an excellent ball passer in the pick-and-roll game.''
The 23-year-old Wright played two seasons at the City College of San Francisco before transferring to Utah. His older brother, Dorell, is a forward with the Portland Trail Blazers.
''He wouldn't be overwhelmed by the NBA,'' Casey said. ''He's grown up around the NBA. He's been to numerous NBA games, worked out with NBA players, so he's not going to come in shell-shocked to go against guys in practice.''
