Lead Warriors by 10 or more points? You still lose over half the time

Published Dec. 19, 2015 12:55 p.m. ET

At some point in the 2015-16 season, we might run out of superlatives for these Golden State Warriors, especially if they keep spotting teams huge leads before coming back for the win. Take Friday night: After trailing by 12 points at halftime against the Milwaukee Bucks, the defending champions rallied for a 121-112 win, moving to 26-1 on the season.

That kind of double-digit comeback has kind of become Golden State's thing. In the past two seasons, the Warriors are 18-13 in games when they've trailed by at least 10 points:

So even when you take a double-digit lead on Golden State, you're probably going to lose. For a little context, consider that only 11 teams in 2014-15 (including the Warriors, of course) won at least 58.1 percent of their games.

Or, put another way: At their current rate, the Warriors would win 47 games in an 82-game season -- even if they spotted the other team a 10-point lead in every single game. Every game. In that case, they'd still currently be the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference and the fifth seed in the West.

Of course, one of those Golden State losses came in their lone defeat this season when the Bucks claimed a 108-95 victory. So at this point in 2015-16, the only blueprint for beating the Warriors involves catching them at the end of a monster road trip and on the night after a physical double-overtime game. Beyond that? A double-digit lead will help, but it's no guarantee of a win.
