Eric Gordon: Pelicans to be 'one of the best' scoring teams under Gentry
The New Orleans Pelicans and new head coach Alvin Gentry might be a match made in heaven. Eric Gordon and Gentry, at the very least, are quite simpatico.
When the Pelicans officially introduced Gentry as coach on Monday, he mentioned Gordon as one of the many reasons he was so eager to take the job: "I talked to him the other day, and I told him, 'I'm determined to coach you one way or the other, and if I have to come to New Orleans to do that, then I'll do that'," Gentry said in his usual half-joking demeanor.
And Gordon, in turn, made it clear that Gentry's tutelage and offensive forte could unleash the Pelicans next season. On a podcast on the team's official website, Gordon said that New Orleans would play faster than it did under Monty Williams, as Williams preferred to slow the pace and concentrate on halfcourt defense. Of course, Gentry and the Golden State Warriors just proved fairly conclusively that pace and top-notch defense aren't mutually exclusive.
Then Gordon went a step further: "I would expect us to be one of the best, if not the best scoring team in the NBA for sure."
Between that pronouncement and Gentry's complimentary words about Anthony Davis, it's fair to say that confidence is high in New Orleans.
