Do the Orlando Magic need a jersey redesign?
This NBA offseason has been one of the most exciting in recent memory. No, not for all of the player movement and scuttlebutt, although that was certainly fun, too. But several teams have either redesigned or made alterations to their jerseys for the upcoming season, and the results have largely been promising.
With teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers looking so dapper in their new duds, the question naturally arises of whether the Orlando Magic are in need of a jersey change. The team did get updated threads not too long ago, and they're stylish, but there's also something somewhat dated about the look, according to Sporting News' Phil Hecken:
"Yes, the team just got new uniforms a couple years ago, and they attempted to faux-back to the pinstripe beauties they wore a generation ago. It was a nice idea, but in practice, the uniforms just aren’t attractive. The color scheme of blue and black is fine, but the pinstripes need to go. Fortunately, under Nike, we probably won’t see any gray sleeved alternates."
The problem with any Magic redesign could very well be the nostalgia associated with the Orlando teams of the mid-90s. Adults in their 30s today grew up with Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway, and the jerseys from those teams will always be beloved. Any potential changes going forward, then, might be best served to make a completely clean break from the past.
