Clippers' J.J. Redick explains how he got into collecting watches

Earlier this month, watch publication Hodinkee held an inaugural collector's forum in New York that Los Angeles Clippers guard J.J. Redick attended when the Clippers were in town to face the Brooklyn Nets.

Redick, an avid watch collector, spoke with WWD about his watch collection, how he got into watches and his thoughts on the conference.

Redick started collecting watches almost a decade ago, right before he was drafted by the Orlando Magic in the 2006 NBA Draft, and has been obsessed ever since:

In terms of his personal collection, Redick actually collects fewer watches than most would expect:

Like most collectors of any sort, it can be invigorating to speak with others who are passionate about the same thing. It's just a pretty expensive habit.

WWD: How did you become interested in watches?

J.J. Redick: I bought my first watch in 2006 a day before the NBA draft, so now it’s been almost 10 years of watch ownership. It was a Rolex Datejust, stainless steel, 36 millimeter with a white gold fluted bezel.

WWD: How many watches do you presently own?

J.J.R.: Right now I have 13. Generally speaking, I keep my collection between 12 and 15 watches — I could see myself going above that number, but my biggest thing is that I enjoy wearing them. If I feel like I haven’t worn a watch in six months or a year, does it really belong in my collection? There are a few watches I could never envision getting rid of, but somewhere between 12 and 18 watches is ideal for me — everyone is different.
