Sprint Cup Practice 3 results for Quaker State 400 at Kentucky

Published Jul. 8, 2016 4:34 p.m. ET

After a rain delay of more than four hours, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice for the Quaker State 400 resumed at Kentucky Speedway.

Heavy storms forced the lengthy delay, as well as the cancellation of qualifying, which means the field for Saturday night's race has been set by owner points.

When practice resumed, reigning Cup champion Kyle Busch had a lurid spin in Turn 2, but managed to catch his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota before it crashed.

Equally unhappy was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who on his first run was just 32nd in the 40-car field. "Just wrecking into the corner," Earnhardt said. "The car steers into the corner by itself. How can we be this ----ed up?"

But after a round of adjustments, Earnhardt's Hendrick Motorsports team found a little more speed in his car, and he wound up 19th.

On top of the board at the end of the session, as he was during Friday's lone practice, was JGR's Carl Edwards, who had a best lap of 188.633 miles per hour.

Martin Truex Jr. was second at 187.774 mph in the Furniture Row Racing Toyota. Clocking in third was Kyle Larson, with Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon completing the top five. All five of the affiliated Toyotas were in the top seven during practice.

The final Happy Hour session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
