Practice 2 results: Kahne fastest as Johnson, Stewart get into wall
The action kicked off early at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hit the .533-mile track for a 55-minute practice session.
Hendrick Motorsports' Kasey Kahne went to the top of the charts early in the session and the No. 5 Chevrolet remained there for the duration of the practice. Kahne was fastest in Friday's lone practice session and qualified eighth for Sunday's race.
Stewart-Haas Racing's Kevin Harvick was second-fastest in the early Saturday morning session, followed by Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin.
Pole sitter Matt Kenseth was 19th-fastest in the session in his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
Crew chief Luke Lambert returned to work calling the shots on the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing team Saturday morning after NASCAR deferred his suspension until the final appeal is heard. Lambert and driver Ryan Newman were able to put up the 20th-fastest time of the session.
Many drivers battled loose conditions throughout the session, with some losing the battle and catching the wall.
Just eight minutes into practice, Tony Stewart's No. 14 SHR Chevrolet got loose on the high side of the track and made contact with the outside wall. The crew went to work repairing the right rear quarter panel and TV panel, and got Stewart back on track with 15 minutes left in the session. Stewart was 24th-fastest on the speed charts.
Jimmie Johnson also caught the wall in practice, but suffered only cosmetic damage to the right side of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. He was 10th-fastest in the session.
Former teammates Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. also had a moment in practice when Edwards was slow on the track and Stenhouse drove into the back of the No. 19 JGR Toyota.
Edwards expected Stenhouse to go low, but the Roush Fenway Racing driver could not react in time. As a result of the contact, Stenhouse's No. 17 Ford suffered damage to the nose, but the team was able to make repairs and get him back on track. After the session, Edwards went to Stenhouse's hauler, shook hands with his former RFR teammate and discussed the incident.
Jamie McMurray ran the most laps of the session, 106, and was 11th-fastest on the speed charts.
Harvick had the best 10-consecutive-lap average of the session, followed by Busch, Paul Menard, Kahne and Logano.
One practice session remains for the Sprint Cup Series on Saturday morning ahead of Sunday's Food City 500 in Support of Steve Byrnes and Stand Up To Cancer.
