Practice 1 results: See who was fastest Friday at Phoenix International Raceway

Jimmie Johnson led Friday’s single round of practice for Sunday’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Johnson, the winner last week at Texas Motor Speedway, lapped the one-mile PIR oval at 141.827 mile per hour in his familiar No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Second-fast was Kyle Larson, who ran 141.783 mph in his Chip Ganassi-owned Chevy.
Fastest of the championship hopefuls was Kurt Busch of Stewart-Haas Racing, who was third. Then came Carl Edwards in the first of the four Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas. Larson’s teammate, Jamie McMurray, completed the top five.
Kevin Harvick, winner of the last four PIR races, wound up sixth. Other notables included Dale Earnhardt Jr. (ninth), Danica Patrick (14th) and Jeff Gordon 25th).
Sprint Cup qualifying is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET, with two rounds of practice on Saturday. The first round will be at 11:30 a.m. ET, with Happy Hour slated for 2:30 p.m. ET.
Sunday’s event is the third and final race in the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Jeff Gordon is already locked into the one-race, winner-take-all Championship Round next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway, while the Phoenix race will decide which three drivers join Gordon in the title battle and which four are eliminated.
