Mark Martin's future up in the air

Published Jan. 22, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

Mark Martin isn’t discussing specifics of his long-term future just yet — at least not with the media — but he says that he has no plans to extend his driving role in the No. 55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota beyond the original plan.

Martin is sharing the organization’s driving role in that car, planning 25 Sprint Cup Series points races this season. Last year, with Martin, Brian Vickers and Michael Waltrip all involved in driving for the team, the team was in the running at several races and challenged for wins on multiple outings. He originally was announced as a co-driver for the car through 2013.

But does Martin see a continued high level of performance extending his role?

“I don’t expect to be in the car,” he said when asked about 2014. “That’s not my goal. My goal is to see (crew chief) Rodney (Childers) and the (No.) 55 car race for a championship. This year, we’ll do everything that we can to try to win races and perform, but I want to help Rodney achieve his ultimate goal, which is a championship.”

So what does he plan to do beyond this season?

“No need in worrying about what’s next,” he said. “What’s next is my 25 races we’ve got on board this year and having fun and being part of the organization and hopefully continuing to get stronger and build a stronger organization.”
