Jamie McMurray describes his first stint during Rolex 24 at Daytona
Former Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray has been hard at work Saturday night competing in his sixth Rolex 24 at Daytona for Chip Ganassi Racing.
The NASCAR star powered the No. 02 Target/Ford EcoBoost Riley Prototype car to the third spot before giving up the seat to IndyCar star and 2013 Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan.
Climbing from the car after three stints, McMurray described how different the Prototype cars are compared to his usual NASCAR ride.
"Did I really do three (hours)? I thought I did five," said McMurray. "It's just very uncomfortable compared to a (NASCAR Sprint) Cup car. The seat doesn't really fit anybody, so it's way more uncomfortable than what you're used to.
"It's a lot of fun, though. It's so much fun for me," he said. "I'm glad I got to run at a normal time. Normally I have to get in at midnight or something, and you don't really get into it because you're so out of it. Our car is really good. Scott did an awesome job that first stint. If we can just survive throughout the night and hand it off to him in that last run tomorrow, we should have a chance."
With Kanaan in the car and 18 hours left in the 24-hour endurance race, the No. 02 moved into second overall behind the other Chip Ganassi Racing entry the No. 01 driven by Joey Hand.
Three-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon opened the race in the Chip Ganassi Racing No. 02 Prototype, while 2014 Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year Kyle Larson had yet to make his first stint in the car.
During a lengthy caution for fluid on the track with 17 hours and 30 minutes left in the race, Kanaan had to take the car behind the wall to repair a broken front splitter.
