Hamilton apologizes in letter to F1 chief

Lewis Hamilton has apologized to Formula One's governing body for a series of outbursts after the Monaco Grand Prix.

FIA president Jean Todt said the 2008 champion wrote a letter to FIA apologizing for criticizing stewards and fellow drivers after the May 29 race.

In a reference to Ali G, the TV character made famous by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, Hamilton also questioned jokingly after the race whether he received two drive-through penalties during that grand prix because he was black.

Todt said Hamilton's comments were ''unacceptable'' but added that the matter is closed.

Hamilton was penalized after colliding with Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado as he attempted to pass them on the narrow Monaco circuit.

The British driver called his two rivals ''ridiculous'' and also criticized stewards after the race for imposing the penalties.

Hamilton says he made peace with the stewards and apologized to Massa and Maldonado on Twitter two days after the race.
