Carpenter will run Chevys this season

Published Feb. 13, 2012 8:00 a.m. ET

Ed Carpenter Racing has signed with Chevrolet as its engine provider deal for the upcoming IndyCar season.

Carpenter confirmed the deal with Chevrolet to The Associated Press on Monday morning, hours ahead of IndyCar's planned State of the Sport presentation. He'll be officially introduced as a Chevy driver during the evening events.

Chevrolet is making its return to IndyCar after a six-year absence from the series. The manufacturer had already signed four teams for 2012. The addition of Carpenter could give Chevrolet 11 cars on the grid this season.

Carpenter will be the only owner/driver in IndyCar. He's got lucrative sponsorship from Fuzzy's Ultra Premium Vodka, but had been jockeying for an engine deal with one of the three series manufacturers.
