Austin Dillon hits record high, low

Austin Dillon had a record-breaking performance at Kentucky Speedway on Friday night

He led the most laps – 192 of 200 – of any winner.

He had a 9.852-second lead over Kurt Busch at the finish line – the largest margin of victory.

And he took over the Nationwide Series points lead for the first time in his career.

However, the last nugget will be short-lived as Dillon’s car failed post-race inspection. NASCAR officials said the No. 3 Chevrolet was too low on the height sticks in the rear of the car.

Team owner and Dillon’s grandfather Richard Childress said Saturday in the garage, “I’ve never seen Austin so high and so low at the same time. It was like he’d been shot.”

Childress says the crew did not deliberately lower the rear of the car.

“We use 1,200-pound springs to keep the back end up,” Childress said. “A rear jack bolt worked its way back on a rough-ass track. It was certainly nothing intentional—and it certainly wasn’t an advantage.

NASCAR spokespersons added that penalties would be forthcoming next week. Dillon is likely looking at a six-point fine, which would give his Richard Childress Racing teammate Elliott Sadler the points lead. Crew chief Danny Stockman could receive a $10,000 fine for the infraction.
