Veteran pitcher Dan Haren says Marlins' struggles 'hard to deal with'
Daren Haren gave his all for the struggling Miami Marlins in his outing on Thursday, but it wasn't enough, and the Fish were subsequently swept by the St. Louis Cardinals, getting outscored 15-5 in the three-game series.
Haren, a 12-year veteran pitcher, can hardly bear the Marlins' struggles, not just for himself as he rounds out his major-league career, but for his teammates.
"It's very hard," Haren said after the Marlins' 5-1 loss to the Cardinals on Thursday. "Obviously, it's pretty much dead silent in here now. I don't know how to gauge it, but things aren't going well. It's tough to really describe, but the game ain't stopping. We have to come out tomorrow and play."
The Marlins are now on a four-game losing streak and have lost seven of their last eight games, averaging 2.1 runs per game during the stretch.
The team has now fallen to 30-44, a win percentage of .405.
"It's hard, especially at my age, at this stage of my career, it's hard to deal with," Haren said. "I feel for the other 24 guys in here. We're trying to push and win a game, but we can't."
It won't get any easier for the Marlins after facing the best team in baseball, as they'll begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Haren's former team, on Friday.
"There's no way out except just digging ourselves out and trying to win the next game. The Dodgers aren't going to care that we got swept," Haren said. "They're going to come out here and want to win. So we can't feel sorry for ourselves, that's for sure."
