Rangers void Greene's contract

Published Feb. 25, 2010 7:09 p.m. ET

Infielder Khalil Greene's contract was voided Thursday by the Texas Rangers.

Greene spent last season with St. Louis while missing 46 games in two stints on the disabled list due to social anxiety. The Rangers announced on Monday that a private matter, which they didn't identify, prevented him from reporting to spring training.

``This was not about a contract,'' Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. ``It's about a player being well.''

Daniels called the move ``the cleanest option right now'' and said the Rangers will ``stay in touch with Khalil.''

Texas agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract with the 30-year-old on Jan. 21 with plans to play him as a utility infielder. Greene has also played for San Diego.
