Mariners place Mike Carp on disabled list

The Seattle Mariners have placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin muscle and recalled Justin Smoak from Triple-A Tacoma.
Carp left Sunday's game at Los Angeles with discomfort after stretching for a throw in the fifth inning. He was hitting .308 with three doubles and a homer in his last 15 games and has a .206 this year with five home runs and 20 RBIs.
This is Carp's third stint on the disabled list this season following a pair caused by right shoulder injuries.
Smoak was optioned to Tacoma on July 23 in the midst of a 1-for-25 slide that dropped his big league average to .189. He is tied for the Mariners' lead in home runs (13) and is fourth in RBIs (38). Seattle acquired him two years ago in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to Texas.
