Cubs reliever Travis Wood makes spectacular catch in left field ivy

Travis Wood: Utility Player of the Year.

The Chicago Cubs reliever found himself playing left field against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday night on a double-switch that would keep him in the game and on ice for later service against lefties.

No one expected Wood to see too much action, much less make a running catch into the ivy for an out. And, welp:

That's a reliever tracking the ball all the way [Chris Berman voice] back, back, back b-yackkkk. And then making the damn catch.

Even Wood, whose demeanor typically runs in direct line with his surname, had to smile.

And Maddon couldn't help but shrug in amazement.

Wood would go on to pitch and close out the top of the eighth on a pick-off pickle.

Dan is on Twitter. Travis Wood: not the hero Chicago deserves. The hero Chicago needs.
