Atlanta Braves Trade for Josh Collmenter

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Atlanta Braves added to their pitching staff by swinging a deal for veteran right-hander Josh Collmenter with the Cubs.

The Atlanta Braves have made yet another trade, acquiring pitcher Josh Collmenter from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash. Collmenter is set to join the Braves for their current series. The move is somewhat of a non-factor as Collmenter’s better seasons are thought to be behind him as he has struggled to find major league work as of late. After being released by the Diamondbacks in August, he signed a minor league deal with the Cubs but was never called up.

Josh Collmenter has been a productive major league pitcher for multiple seasons. Over the past couple of seasons he has struggled and spent time trying to find his pitches again. He is headed into his age 31 season and should be given a chance with the Atlanta Braves to re-find the pitcher he was when he was the D-Backs’ Opening Day starter for multiple seasons.

The Braves have done a fantastic job for the past two seasons acquiring players like Collmenter. Players who have an upside that other teams have given up on. The Braves have acquired them for close to nothing and dealt them for legitimate prospects.

In this case the Braves may be looking for Collmenter to help their major league roster and see if he can be the starter he used to be. The Braves’ young pitching hasn’t panned out the way they were hoping it would headed into their new stadium. Adding Collmenter to the mix for next to nothing was a good move and if nothing else will provide the Braves with an option for next season if Collmenter can make any improvement.

Josh Collmenter could prove to be a very good investment for the Braves and be put in the back of the Braves rotation headed into the new ballpark. The one thing that this move does signal is the Braves’ distrust in their young hurlers.

Acquiring starting pitching both in the trade and free agent markets will be priorities for the Braves this offseason as they look to improve as they move into their new home. The problem for the Braves will be that the starting pitching market is growing increasingly thin and with trade prices sky-high, making moves like acquiring a low-end starter like Josh Collmenter is a good move.

This is the first move of many for the Braves as they head into what should be a very interesting winter for their franchise, as they head into SunTrust Park in 2017.
