Dallas/Fort Worth is renowned for its terrific golf options. Here are our top five picks for the best public Dallas golf courses.

Golf is truly a magical sport. Nothing else is more frustrating, yet universally loved and accepted by its players, and no sport offers a more relaxing yet emotionally exhausting experience than getting out on the links with your friends. No matter how experienced, confident or talented you are at golf, unless your name is Woods, Palmer or Nicklaus, the game will still get the best of you in the end.

Luckily for people like us, The Dallas/Fort Worth area perennially ranks among the best public golf scenes in the entire nation. Just about every weekend from late February to November, tee boxes are packed to the brim with golf nuts, who are looking to get in a solid 18, or a quick nine. With such a vast array of options from Ft. Worth, to Arlington, to Oak Cliff, Grapevine, and everywhere in between, you are bound to find the right course for you somewhere.

5. Stevens Park Golf Course

1005 N Montclair Ave, Dallas, TX 75208

www.stevensparkgolf.com/

Affectionately known as “Little Augusta,” Stevens Park is one of the best pure golf experiences in the DFW area. After a complete redesign of all 18 holes in 2011, which includes new tee boxes, fairways, greens and bunkers on every hole, this course has improved on an already impressive product in recent years.

Always crowded on the weekends, Stevens Park offers of few very tough challenges for the players, as well as great views of Downtown Dallas, optimal facilities and an extremely friendly staff.

For the amateur golfer playing from the blues, the course is par-70, measuring 6,013 yards, and includes a great mix of par 3’s scattered in with a couple of very lengthy par 5’s. Perhaps the most difficult hole on the course is the par-5 16th hole, which forces you to lay up, and then hit the ball over the face of a cliff, which was one of the most unique and challenging shots I have ever experienced.

All in all, considering the reasonable rates and overall experience, it’s no surprise that Stevens Park cracked our top five courses in the area.

4. Dallas Cowboys Golf Club

1600 Fairway Dr, Grapevine, TX 76051

The next course on our list is probably the most advanced and well-kept facility in the entire Metroplex. With a clubhouse full of Cowboys memorabilia, great food, and extremely cool facilities, this course is a unique experience. We are are talking of course, about the Dallas Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas.

There is one negative about this course that we must get out of the way first, and that is the price. If you are reading this right now, chances are, you love golf. But only true golf nuts would consider paying the green fees that range from $129 in the twilight hours of 3:45 PM and later, all the way up to $189.95 for morning or early afternoon tee times.

Now that that is out of the way, let’s focus on the, oh so beautiful course that Jerry Jones built for us.

The Dallas Cowboys Golf Club is a par-72, 6,553-yard course from the silver tees, and provides from very challenging golf shots for just about anyone. The fairways and greens are in phenomenal shape, and there is plenty of Cowboys history scattered throughout the course on both stone markers and other visuals.

If it wasn’t for the price, this one might be higher on our list, but if you can afford it/want to spend the money, hurry out to this course quickly and enjoy one of the best golf facilities in the country.

3. The Tribute Golf Club

1000 Lebanon Rd, The Colony, TX 75056

www.thetributegc.com/

If you’re a golf fan in Dallas, you’ve probably heard of Tour 18 in Flower Mound. The Course takes famous holes from all around the United States, such as Amen Corner at Augusta National, number 17 at TPC Sawgrass, and No. 10 at Winged Foot, among various others, and recreates them so that we amateurs can take a crack at some of the holes our favorite pros play every year.

The Tribute Golf Club took a different approach to that design, and gives us a chance to play the best links-style courses from the United Kingdom, and gives us a chance to play holes that we would otherwise have to spend thousands of dollars going overseas to enjoy. The par-72 7,000-yard mammoth brings us famous holes such as numbers 1 and 18 from St. Andrews, the 5th from Royal Troon, and Hogan’s Alley at Carnoustie, in a brilliantly designed course that is as beautiful as it is difficult.

It is a bit pricey, at $79 Monday through Thursday, and $99 on the weekends, but if you’ve never had a chance to play some of these holes, which most of us haven’t, this course is a perfect way to get that UK Golf experience right in our own backyard.

This course is truly one of the best golf experiences in the DFW area, and well worth the price of admission, which is why it lands at number three on our list.

www.arlingtongolf.com/

Located in the heart of Arlington, Texas, right between Dallas and Ft. Worth, Tierra Verde Golf Club is one of the top golf courses in the entire state of Texas. Tierra Verde is the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary, which is pretty cool, but the sheer beauty of this course is what brings people from all around the Metroplex to enjoy the experience.

Named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex in 2012 by Avid Golfer, Tierra Verde’s par-72 6,085-yard layout is both breathtaking and challenging. While difficult, this course provides a great experience, and some of the most uniquely designed holes in the Metroplex.

The pricing here is extremely reasonable as well, with prices ranging from $51.90 on weekdays, to $61.90 on Friday, and $72.40 on Saturday and Sunday, while the twilight hours bring even better pricing options for the later golfers.

www.texasstargolf.com/

Our number one course for the DFW area should come as no surprise to those who are familiar with golf in the region. The Texas Star Golf Course, located in Euless, Texas, has been recognized for its beauty and serene atmosphere by Golf Digest, Golf Weekly, and The Dallas Morning News on multiple occasions.

One of the most unique factors of this par-71, 6,529-yard mammoth is the fact that it is a truly secluded golf experience. While most public courses will have you run into busy streets or back up to private homes, Texas Star lets you enjoy golf the way it should be experienced. The ponds, fairways, tee boxes, waterfalls and woodlands surrounding the course, give you the escape from city golf that most of us forget is so rewarding.

Meanwhile, the clubhouse’s Raven Grille serves world-class food and beverages for patrons to enjoy before, after or during their round, all for reasonable prices. Likewise, the green fees at Texas Star are just as affordable with prices of $57 on weekdays, $77 on weekends, and $37 at weekday twilight hours, with weekend twilight at just $47, all of which include carts and range balls.
