Why did Jacob Eason ultimately pick Georgia?

Georgia fans had to be feeling sick once five-star quarterback prospect Jacob Eason began exploring his options once Mark Richt was no longer the Bulldogs head coach. Making matters even worse, Eason narrowed his final list down to Georgia and Florida.

Despite both schools being desperate for quarterback help, the Gators still managed to defeat UGA the past two seasons and likely ended any chance Richt had of returning to Athens in 2016. So what made Eason decide to commit to Georgia for good?

Eason recently spoke to 247Sports to answer that question.

“It’s just everything. In my heart, I committed to the school a long time ago. And coach Richt and coach Bobo, and all that stuff, there’s been so much coaching change and that’s just college football. I was hoping things would work out, deep down, and they ended up working out great. (Georgia) Got the best offensive line coach (Sam Pittman from Arkansas) and a great [offensive coordinator in Jim Chaney from Pitt], and a great new head coach who is in the National Championship game. So I’m excited.”

The talented quarterback prospect also discussed the awkwardness of being recruited by two division rivals, which only continued to fuel an already bitter rivalry.

“I know it’s a huge rivalry, obviously. It was kinda of weird that my top two schools came down to the biggest rivalry maybe in college football. Just two great schools, a lot of good things to say about both of them. Georgia’s my home and I’m looking forward to playing against (Florida QB commit) Feleipe (Franks) some day.”

Now that Eason has reaffirmed his commitment to Georgia, Smart and his staff have an excellent prospect to build the offense around for the foreseeable future. Ultimately it was the failure at the quarterback position that did in Richt in the end. UGA fans hope that Eason can be the first in a long line of successful quarterbacks under Smart.
