What might competitors say in Ohio State QB race?
Urban Meyer has not done much to give away who he might think will win the starting quarterback job at Ohio State this fall. Heck, he might not even have a guess himself.
But he got some unsolicited advice Monday night from an old friend while making an appearance at a fundraiser near Bowling Green, the northwest Ohio school where he got his first head coaching position in 2001.
Per the Toledo Blade, former BGSU basketball coach Dan Dakich -- who is now an outspoken college basketball analyst for ESPN -- told the crowd at a fundraiser for autism research he found three envelopes that were allegedly intended for Meyer and came from each of the quarterback candidates (Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett and Braxton Miller).
"Coach, those other two guys suck. Start me," read the note attributed to Jones while the fictional Barrett reminded Meyer, "Coach, I saved you last year. Start me."
Finally there was Miller, whose note appealed to Meyer's sentimental side: "Coach, you came here because I'm a Heisman Trophy candidate. Screw them. Start me."
While Jones and Barrett have said all the right things publicly so far (Miller has declined interview requests since last fall), Dakich's bit of comic relief was a fun look into what figures to be a hard decision for Meyer, one he said at the end of spring ball he will dread making because it means having to disappoint two of the candidates.
